Landscape planning

The Ova da Bernina gorge is characterized on the one hand by thousands of years of natural forces, and on the other hand by sensitive civilization interventions. Within this field of tension, it is necessary today to mediate between the needs of the community of Pontresina and those of the animal inhabitants of the place. Presumably - from a non-human point of view - the perimeter has to be perceived as a strongly impaired space. The Echolot project is therefore primarily intended as an ecological compensation measure.

Echolot is, as it were, an infrastructure project that fits into the existing network of paths in the surrounding area and accentuates special landscape qualities of the gorge. The project proposal is composed of minimally invasive elements, such as bridges, footbridges and smaller waiting places, while providing areas dedicated exclusively to bats.

For this reason, the explicit prohibition of construction in the ravine itself is disregarded to a certain extent: on the one hand, it falls below the specified construction horizon, and on the other hand, the structure in question is a suspended structure that serves the protection of species and does not need to be founded below the relevant horizon.

The design makes the gorge experienceable for people, creates identity and joy of discovery and tries to create understanding for an interspecific cohesion.
